All the World is For Your Use as an Artist

If you look at the by-line on my blog, it says something like “Where Art, Feminism, and Stepparenting Coalesce”. Who in their right mind puts together a conglomeration of these things? What in the world would even lead to the presupposed “coalesce”-ing?

Obviously, given my Type A, organized personality, this blog was not set up with such a mish-mash of topics on purpose. Had I been smarter and more aware like most of you, I would have created specific blog pages or separate blogs or something. As it happened, though, things emerged, changed, evolved, pushed in one direction, pulled in another leading to the current state.

This is the creative life, though. This is art. We can’t always anticipate what we will mine for our creative acts. Maybe it’s stepparenting one day, art and poetry the next. Who knows? But, as an artist- all the world is but a stage for your using.

The following appeared in a book Women and Poetry. The author of the section is writing about a famous Polish poet Wislawa Szymborska (one of my faves), she writes

In 1996 Wislawa Szymborska won the Nobel Prize for poetry. And what were some of her subjects? Hitler as a baby; her cat, her apartment, her husband’s death; torture; writing a resume; onions; pornography; terrorists; her sister; the family album; a fertility fetish; Rubens’ women; a poetry reading; conversation with a stone; smiles; feeling bad about yourself;…

I am not saying any of us will be the next Wislawa Szymborska or even that you desire to be. What I do think is great is that anything may serve as inspiration in your life and you do not need to limit yourself. Stretch yourself in relation to the topics you choose. Be brave and write (and right) about onions, cats, smiles and more. You never know what may reveal itself to you. Happy creating.:)

  1. Totally agree that we don’t need to limit ourselves when it comes to creativity. We can use anything and everything we like!

  2. so much in the world to explore, to admire, to wonder about…so little time!

  3. For months I kept a theme for each day of the week. Alas, writing 5 posts a day didn’t leave much time for all my other hobbies. Now I still try to keep a theme, but it’s not set in stone. I am indeed an artist in that regard. Which reminds me that I haven’t done much art just for fun lately. Good post!

  4. Thanks for the boost, Kimberly! :)
